Wish there was a CL ad for the 280 near me, $2500 for a lot of rust and very little car.

A clean 280z should set you back $ 6k -$ 8k. A really nice one will be >$ 10k.

Did they even use base/clear paint in 1978? Or is that a respray?

My 1970 doesn’t have a clear coat... but really I don’t know, so many of these cars were repainted.

You were on the Spokane Craigslist and failed to mention the single most awesome car on there?
A 1964 Hillman!

I have a friend that would probably love to buy that car. He had a 280Z 2+2 in HS, and like a lot of us, wants to regain his youth by buying a similar car today. I don’t think his was an autotragic, however.
I’d venture to say that the 260Z was probably worse, although I know a lot of people despise the 2+2 just because it’s the 2+2.

True Datsun fans despise the 2+2, then to add to the travesty it has an automatic. T he 280z from 1978 could be had with a 5 speed.

I just did a search for “Datsun” and it had to pull from surrounding areas...

I had a ‘78 280z! I miss that car dearly.
2+2 and a slushbox is an amazingly effective way to ruin such a great car.

My neighbor had a 4 speed 1978 280z, i t was very nice. Not as peppy as my 240 but better for putting down the miles.

I like them once the t-tops start. So for me this probably is peak bad Z.

IMO T Tops equals 280zx.

I’ll sell you a 76' 260z for much cheaper. It’s been under a cover in the backyard of a family member’s house for the last 20 years. Original owner, stock.

I think you’re right. That’s where it begins for me.
I think it’s also where the turbos began ;)

The automatic transmission is certainly a buzzkill.

If it’s not rusted through you could have $10,000 sitting there.

The published times are 7.2 sec for the zx. Turbo and 8.6 sec for the 240z (0-60). I will say that the 240 is a very visceral experience.

A super clean one sold on BaT really cheap. Plus 76’ is the first year of smog in CA.

Ditto. Other than rust, my 78 280Z was great.
